A Special Issue of the Humanities Journal Ritið – with EDDA as the term of reference – on the “University and the Crisis” has been published. The publication was a collaborative project of researchers, participating in EDDA’s Research Area 1, Theme 2. In the Special Issue, academics discuss the University in the past and the present, analyzing it as societal institution and contextualizing it historically. In the wake of the Icelandic economic collapse of 2008, and the subsequent social, cultural and economic crisis, questions were raised about the responsibility of the academic community, about its ability to act as a resisting force to ideological hegemony and about its role in conveying alternative truths. This Special Issue of Ritið engages these questions, focusing on the University as a site for unconditional academic, cultural and societal debates.
